Ecological control and ecoepidemiology in the management of arthropods of interest in public health
Abstract
Worldwide, there are many diseases such as dengue, Chagas disease, leishmaniasis, malaria, intestinal parasites, among others, which continue to be a real public health problem. From this pers- pective, ecoepidemiology arises, which is a new discipline that emerges at the interface between ecology and epidemiology, this aims to study the impact of alterations in the environment, including the living beings that are there, on the health of hu- man beings. In epidemiology, the study of insects is very important, since many are vectors of important diseases, making room for the branch that studies insects of sanitary importance (Medical Entomolo- gy). This zoological group is capable of influencing human health in a very variable way, but not at all negligible, and they can cause pleasant sensations (especially due to their aesthetic appearance) to produce discomfort and even transmit diseases, more or less serious. From this area we could apply Integrated Pest Management (IPM), which is a stra- tegy used to control pests and vectors, and its main objective is to use the least amount of pesticides possible, apply cultural work and biological control, to In order to avoid or reduce contact with people and pollution of the environment. There is no doubt that the ecological management of vector insects and pests, within the framework of sustainable de- velopment, requires the application of educational, health and ecological strategies, as it seeks to mini- mize the environmental impact on communities and the general environment.
