Abstract

Researches, articles and documents about the El Prado neighborhood, as well as its planning and impact on the urban fabric of Barranquilla, Colombia, lack an adequate analysis regarding the inefficient and little coverage of public services and the situation of unhealthy conditions in the metropolis of the first decade of the 20th century. The purpose of this article was to carry out an urban reflection on the El Prado neighborhood, as a pioneering project and a model of development and innovation, as well as to study the reasons that led the influential economic class of the city to reach this process of comfort, convenience and improvement of the urban nucleus of that moment. It followed a bibliographic documentary type approach, as a reflective, qualitative and critical analysis of the El Prado neighborhood, its planning and impact as an urban model in the growing and pioneering city, which in the second half of the 19th century achieved economic and strategic significance, when steam navigation began on the Magdalena River. This allowed El Prado to become the main import and export center of Colombia until the first half of the 20th century. As for conclusion, the urban value and necessary impact that this renowned neighborhood had at the time is recognized, as well as its mark on the future projection of infrastructure improvement and public services for the adequate growth of the city.
