Preliminary evaluation of the pH of the rains in the city of Portoviejo, Ecuador
Evaluación preliminar del pH de las lluvias en la ciudad de Portoviejo, Ecuador
Abstract
Global natural rains generally have a value pH of 5.6, due to dissolution of atmospheric CO2 in rainwater.Rain samples per event were collected at two sites in the Portoviejo ́s city, Ecuador, in 2018. The sampling period corresponded to the wet season of the first five months of the year. The Portoviejo rains presented values above the natural pH of the rains, pHPPV = 6.09 - 6.81, showing that the atmosphere has an influence of alkaline chemical species. 21% of the rains from both sampling sites had the most alkaline pH, 7.5 - 8.0; this is due to the neutralization of the alkaline components from anthropogenic activities in the region. It ́s estimated the chemical substances are causing the increase in the pH of the rain are NH4+ species as a consequence of agricultural activity, and Ca2+ and Mg2+ particles from mining of limestone quarries, these two activities being the main ones in the region of Ecuadorian littoral.
